What is Common Pleas Court?

The Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas is the trial court of general jurisdiction. This means that it hears felony cases as well as civil disputes where the amount of money in controversy is more than $15,000.

There are various specialized units within each operation. Sixteen judges currently serve in the general division. As a part of their judicial office they conduct pre-trials, schedule deadlines, rule on motions, and hear both jury and bench trials.

Court Administration is responsible for facilitating the non-judicial operations of the court under the guidance of the Presiding and Administrative Judge. These administrative duties include budget and fiscal management, caseflow management, personnel management, and jury management.

Administration also ensures compliance with applicable state laws and the Rules of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio as promulgated by the Supreme Court and assuring open access to everyone to resolve criminal and civil disputes timely, fairly, and impartially.
